Cleaning And Maintaining Gutters The Right Way

Gutters play a critical role in directing water away from your home’s foundation, siding, and roofline. Poorly maintained gutters are a leading cause of preventable water damage. Here is how to keep them functioning properly.

How Often to Clean

Most homes need gutter cleaning at least twice a year—once in late spring after trees have finished dropping seed pods and flowers, and once in late fall after most leaves have dropped. Homes surrounded by many trees may need cleaning three to four times per year.

The Cleaning Process

Start by removing debris by hand or with a gutter scoop, working from the end opposite the downspout toward it. Flush the gutter with a garden hose to clear remaining debris and check for proper drainage. Inspect downspouts for clogs and flush them separately if needed.

What to Check While Cleaning

Cleaning is also an opportunity to inspect gutter hangers and fasteners for looseness, check for sections that have pulled away from the fascia, look for sagging that prevents proper drainage, and inspect the fascia board itself for rot or water damage.

When to Call a Professional

If gutters need rehanging, seam sealing, or replacement, professional service ensures the work is done safely and correctly. Leaf guard installation can also reduce the frequency of cleaning needed going forward.
